I am so excited to introduce you to your daily unplug. Oh, how I need this so.
This summer, we were visiting my parents and I was in the throes of monitoring my teenager's social media interactions when my mom looked at me and said, "Boy, am I glad we didn't have to deal with phones when you girls were young." Believe me, I love all the luxuries my daily interactions with technology afford me, but I do not love all the distractions they present. I can't pick up my phone to make a call without a CNN news story alerting me that Hurricane Florence is coming and is "devastating," and "extremely dangerous" and that there was another shooting involving a police officer. I can't open email without shuffling through 18 reminders about how I need this shirt, that power tool, and this OJ is on sale but only through Wednesday! No wonder we all suffer from ADD. Imagine what I could get done without the reminders that pop up on my computer screen ALL.DAY.LONG.
SO. I want to create a way for us to escape this constant pull of technology. Once a week, I will post your daily unplug. This is a challenge for you to do to WITHOUT your phone. Sometimes it'll be something you can accomplish in a matter of minutes, sometimes it'll be a day long challenge. Who's with me?
It'll be fun to hear from participating friends how your day was different. Did you notice more about your surroundings? Did your heart beat a little slower, as the state of the world waits for an appropriate time to be visited? Did you find yourself looking up instead of out?
FIRST thing in the morning, go outside and look up. Take in the sky, the trees, the air, the breeze. Resist the urge to start your day by looking at your phone, by listening to the constant sound of the drone. Look up, not out when you face distress. Sit with your thoughts before POST, you press.
Do it for a week, and see if you notice a slowing of your pulse, a calming of your nerves. A renewed appreciation of nature, and a looking within yourself to solve conflict. It seems so simple, but sometimes a simple shift is all it takes to make us see life from a different perspective, a different angle.
Try it and let me know how it goes in the comments of this blog. And I promise to bring you a new challenge each Monday, and to take the challenge alongside you.
